2017 - In retrospect

I usually make a summary of the past year, but since I now use mostly my instagram (or at least more than I blog) I will make this summary even more summarized than normal. If you want more details, check out my instagram.

So, here's some important things I did 2017:

• Made a lot of manga pages!
  I finished my 42-page historical short story manga Goodbye Sweden, later published in the Swedish manga anthology Nosebleed Studio reser i den svenska historien and the Italian manga anthology Comic 2 Bite. I also finished my 75-page watercolor manga Sjöjungfrun Minna och den hemliga vännen, which will be released in April 2018 in Sweden.
  
  
  

•  Held a lot of manga workshops!
  ...and lessons at schools, libraries and of course my dayjob at Serieskolan (Comic Art School) in Malmö. Plus a bunch of role playing game events with my RPG-book Sword Princess, based on my manga Sword Princess Amaltea.

Dags för mangaworkshop på Österängs bibliotek i Kristianstad! Kl. 14-16 idag. Är ute och håller workshops hela veckan. Imorgon blir det på Anderstorps och Burseryds bibliotek i Småland, på torsdag blir det Kirsebergs och Lindängens bibliotek i Malmö. På tisdag nästa vecka kommer jag till Kristianstads stadsbibliotek. And last but not least:

• Signed a bunch of International deals!
  Not just one or two, I signed 6 International contracts for publishing deals for my mangas:
  
  
  
  Sword Princess Amaltea will be published as an omnibus by Zanir in Czech in April 2018
  
  
  
  Mjau! and Sword Princess Amaltea will be published by PYRAMOND in Germany all through 2018.
  
  
  
  Sword Princess Amaltea was published by Kasaobake in Italy in September 2017 and will continue through 2018.
  
  
  
  Mjau! will be published by Phoenix Dreams Publishing in the US in early Spring of 2018 and Sword Princess Amaltea will be published by Tokyopop in the US starting in June 2018.

So, in the end, I'm pretty satisfied with this year. Couldn't have asked for a better year, actually. This year was a year of travelling, a year of completion, a year of International recognition and a year of a lot of new friends!

And in my private life, big things have been happening as well... oh, what the heck, I'll tell you!

Me and my BF have bought a house! A tiny 50 square meter house that we will rebuild to our liking. All on our own. THIS HAS BEEN MY DREAM FOR SUCH A LONG TIME! It is finally coming true!

Here's a photo of the cottage right now. It will look totally different in a year or so, when we're done with it. I will keep you posted now and then, I promise.

guest house in terrible shape, that needs to come down too.

2017 - My year of fullfilling dreams

So, um... Every year, I make New Year's resolutions for what to accomplish the upcoming year. It has previously helped me to keep myself on trackwith plans and fullfill my dreams.

But...

The last year or two, you can see (if you track my ersolutions back in time) I have started to fail miserably. I'm not sure why. If I would guess, either the plans I put up for myself is not important enough for me, or they just get pushed aside by more urging/interesting/financially motivated stuff I do.

Let's check the New Year's resolutions I did för 2016: 
I will make an animation!
Aah, perfect example. I actually had this plan for 2015 as well, and gave myself a second chance by aiming to do it in 2016 instead. But no, that was not what happened. Don't get me wrong, I truly want to make animation, and I did do some few cuts during 2016, but in the end of Spring I got several more urging and financially motivated projects (like the Sword Princess RPG-book I'm about to release with Saga Games in April, and the full color Mermaid manga I'm making with Rabén & Sjögren, to be released this Fall). Also, Nosebleed Studio started working on our "how to draw manga"-guidebook, which is actually going to be out in stores next month! All this made me quite preocupied during the mid and end of 2016. I'm not regretting them, so I guess the animation project need to stay on the shelf a little longer.

My second resolution was:
I will go to Japan again!
Well, yeah, no. That didn't happen. See all excuses above for explanation. I did however visit Lucca Comics & Games in Italy, which I think helped me alot both in my creativity and my career. This is not me finding excuses, but I actually truly think this trip helped me a lot more than a trip to Japan would. I have realized from several years of looking to Japan and studying (and even attempting to enter) their comic market, that it is perhaps not the working environment I wish to subject myself to. I like having spare time and a chance to do other projects than draw all the time.

Previous years, I have put a grade on my performance of these resolutions, but I'll not do that this year. It won't do me any good.

And I also usually make new ones, on the New Years Eve, but to be honest I don't even remember if I did any or what it was this year. So this year, I think I will just let my spirit and dreams take me whereever, and not focus so much on the bigger picture. Also, I do have personal plans I want to achieve this year, but since I still feel it's a little too early to tell the whole world about them, I'll keep the mystery a little longer. Hopefully, I'll make a longer blog entry about it this year. *mysterious smile*

As you can see, the event for the Fall of 2017 is quite vague, so I'm still keeping it open for changes.

I will mostly be selling with Nosebleed Studio in the Artist Alley, except on the following events:
Scifi-mässan: I'll be in the booth of the publisher Apart förlag, signing Sword Princess Amaltea.
GothCon: I'll be selling my books next to Saga Games, who will sell my RPG-book Sword Princess.
Nordsken: I'm invited as their official guest, so I'll be selling and signing my books on certain times, more about that in a later blog entry.
Göteborg Book Fair: I will be signing in the booth of Kolik förlag (Sword Princess Amaltea) and Rabén & Sjögren (Sjöjungfrun Minna).

My plans this year is to draw, draw, draw all through February - June, making both my 70 page mermaid manga in water colors, and my 42 page historical manga for Nosebleed Studio's next anthology (to be released at NärCon in July). In June and July, I have some game design projects (exciting, but right now secret!). In the Fall, I don't have any plans more than just working at Serieskolan (teaching, my day job) and perhaps take up the animation project if I have time. We'll see...

Wow, this was supposed to be a short blog entry, but as always I just keep babbling about my life. Since this is kind of like my personal diary, I usually just write what I think I need to document.

When I Close My Eyes...

Yet another month has passed, and I didn't have time to write anything here... But now I'm back, I hope!
You know, sometimes you just have too much to do, too many commitments, and then you just need to prioritize. I'm sad that I havn't been able to prioritize my blog, and also my Youtube-channel (which actually has quite a following, 4000+! One of my videos actually have over 100K views! O.o ). I wish I could be more active doing inking videos and tutorials...

You know what? I think I need to be more selfish now. I need to prioritize my own stuff – my blog and my Youtube-channel – to get my own self asteem back. I have been moping around doing routine stuff ever since I finished working on my latest comic When I Close My Eyes, a "short" manga with "only" 42 pages. (Haha, 10 years ago I would have called that a long manga, I guess!) 
I finished it about 2 months ago, and after that I mostly worked with organizing stuff, like Nosebleed Studio, Malmö Seriefest and other organisations I've been part of. And during that time, I have more and more felt lousy, worthless and untalented...
I don't know why!? I mean, my mangas have fans, and a  couple of weeks ago I even got to be on Swedish television, on one of the most popular childrens shows on Barnkanalen, called Superlördag (Super Saturday):

After that appearance on the show, I went to some schools and libraries to do manga workshops (unrelated, I had booked them months before) and suddently I was famous! All the little kids had watched the show and wanted my autograph! Haha, of course I enjoyedthe attention (even from a room full of 9-14 y.o. kids) but also felt a bit taken aback by the difference in attitudes people have towards you when you've been on TV. It's crazy...


But even though this all happened, I still can't help but feeling like I'm losing a race... I have been sending Sword Princess Amaltea to International publishers and still no positive reply. Only a few so far, so I guess I should try harder, but not getting any response at all from some of them is what makes me confused. Should I wait? Or should I look for others? Or is it a pointless game since my name is unknown in those countries? Do I need to go there personally, maybe even travel to some cons or make myself a name first? So many questions...
Still, maybe I just need to put more effort into my Youtube-ing, and they migth notice me... Or does that even matter to them?? Gaaaah!! *confused*

Anyway, this blog entry really should be about the latest manga I have made, When I Close My Eyes. I haven't posted anything here about it, but that's because I now use Instagram alot for quick updates about my everyday life and especially my manga drawing.

With this manga, I decided I wanted to do something else than what I have made previously for Nosebleed Studio's anthologies. The previous three anthologies all had storys made by me for sending to Shueisha Ribon Magazine in Japan, for their monthly manga competitions (which I blogged about here and here). But after my third entry did not place, probably because it was too mature for their audience, I felt I did not thrive anymore in doing mangas for a competition like theirs. It felt too constricting and I wanted more freedom.

So the story for When I Close My Eyes was a story I truly felt I wanted to tell. Without rules and restrictions. It's about a your person, Lo, who a lone traveller in our world. And no, I'm not going to tell you anymore, because then I might spoil it for you!
I also tried a new inking technique with fineliners instead of my beloved steel nibs. It was a nice change, and I like the rough and experimental look it gives to the drawings. Less mainstream, which worked better for the story.

2016 - Time to evolve!

Prepare for some planning. Lot's of planning!

Also: New Years Resolutions.
(Oh boy, this will crash and burn...)
First, the resolutions of 2015:

I will get myself a drivers license!
This was actually my resolution for 2014 too. Um.. yeah. I havn't even tried, I'm so sorry (mostly embarrassed towards my parents who gave me a gift card for some of the lessons at a driving school that I have so far not used... 2 years ago). I get extremely embarrassed by talking about this. I hate feeling like I've lost or failed in something, and this is such a thing. To be honest, I'm just too scared to drive. I am so scared for traffic, high ways, driving, myself behind the wheel... I just feel in my gut I will die in the roads some day!
That's why I think I'll have to deal with this in my own time.
So, if I should grade myself, then a E- perhaps? (Not so sure about this alphabetical grading system, haha)

But I also had another resolution!
I will make an animation!
And this I did! Or at least started doing... Did I fail this too?! Bu hu hu hu...
Well, at least I did make about 50 seconds of my animation. Time is not in abundance and too many other projects and work is taking my time (not in a bad way, I like most of it).
I'll give myself a C+ for this. I didn't animate much, but what I did was good!

And that's why the first of the resolutions for 2016 is:
I will make an animation!
(I give myself a lot of second chanses, haha)
I hope to be able to finish episode 1 (5 min animation) of Mjau! this year. Wish me good luck!

This is a bit tricky. I want to go, mostly because I want to bring my boyfriend and do it together, but I also wish I had more time to go to London and Paris, and the two main comic events there.
We'll have to see how this year pans out...

We'll have to see...

Apart from this, my year will be filled with working at Serieskolan in Malmö, making 2 books together with Nosebleed Studio (more about that in upcoming blog entries), and animating.

This will be a year I need to focus on what I want to make. So I'll use my time wisely.

När serietecknaren Natalia Batista ville skapa en fantasymanga bestämde hon sig också för att göra något som tyvärr saknas bland tecknade serier; en könsomvänd fantasyvärld där prinsessorna räddar prinsarna.
Natalia berättar hur hon utvecklade historien till serien, influenser hon haft och beslut hon fått ta när hon valde att vända på könsmaktsordningen i sin fantasyvärld.

Japp, det är en bra bit upp för oss, som bor i Skåne, men det är också första gången jag faktiskt får betalt för att hålla föreläsningar på ett mangakonvent. Det är stort! Det känns både hedrande och kul att få vara en av deras officiella gäster, det måste väl betyda att jag åstadkommit någon form av berömmelse i mitt yrke och inom mangakretsarna i Sverige.

Det lönar sig att kämpa för något man tror på. ☺

Sword Princess Amaltea vol. 2 är klar!!

Ä N T L I G E N ! ! !

Bok 2 som jag kämpat med sedan i höstas ligger nu på tryckeriet!
Jag känner mig utmattad, smått chockad att jag lyckades och supernöjd med att det hela är över. Ännu en "förlossning" avklarad och ett välskapt barn hoppas jag att det blir (vi får se på NärCon i sommar när den släpps, i butik i augusti).

Så, här är alltså omslaget och även lite förhandstitt på några sidor:

Vad kommer hända? Kommer de att överleva?
Blir det ens en bok tre?? Det får ni se i augusti!

Under våren har jag suttit och tecknat, tuschat och rastrerat under näst intill alla vakna timmar som jag inte arbetat på Serieskolan. Jag började tuscha den 3:e december 2013 och fick klart det sista i boken runt den 8:e juni 2014. 165 sidor på 6 månader, dvs. 27,5 sida i månaden - det är nog ett nytt eget rekord!

Jag hade dock såklart inte hunnit med allt detta om det inte vore för dessa tre förträffliga personerna:
Emil Johansson - min ståndaktige och tålmodige pojkvän och sambo, som inte bara fick äran att kalkera skisser från dator till tuschpapper åt mig (yaaaay....) utan också i tid och otid hämta vatten, hämta godis, laga mat och pusha mig så att boken blev klar!
Catarina Batista - min peppande och trofasta syster som otaliga timmar skalat om de inskannade filerna, plockat bort smuts och fyllt svarta fällt, lagt gråtoner och rättat stavfel, och inte minst följt med och sålt min bok på så många event att hon borde ha en fet medalj!
Elise Rosberg - min eminente partner i företaget Wasabi Press, samt pålitliga vän som också lagt gråtoner och fyllt svarta fällt tills hon storknat, lyssnat på tjat och gnat från mig och stöttat när det verkligen behövts!
Tack, ni tre fantastiska personen för er hjälp!!
Tack också till fina redaktören Fabian på Kolik, till noggranna korrekturläsaren Lena och till alla andra som korrläst, peppat och pushat mig genom bok 2! Tack!!!


Men jag har också hunnit med lite andra serieprojekt under våren (haha, huuur??) som ni tyvärr först får reda på i höst. Se det som kinderäggen; Först får ni lite god choklad (Sword Princess Amaltea vol. 2 i augusti)  sedan en kul leksak (de andra serieprojekten typ efter det).


Väl klar med boken deltog jag i förra helgen i Feministisk Festival i Folkets park i Malmö, alternativet till den mer hajpade och dyra Nordiskt Forum, och satt på fredagen i panelsamtal om nördfeminism med Karin Waller (SF-bokhandeln), Anna Erlandsson (ISIS- nördfeminism i kubik), Antonia Rojas (skrivit avhandling om feminism i sci-fi-litteratur) och Yossra El Said (elev på The Game Assembly). Otroligt intressant och hela festivalen var ett ända stor "HURRA!!!". Mer sånt vill vi se!

På lördagen var jag också med på arrangemanget Spelkultur och feminism som bl.a. Anna Erlandssson (ISIS) arrangerade med Sverok och Spelkultur i Skåne. Ännu ett fantastisk arrangemang!

2013 - in retrospect

Time for some time travel - backwards!
This past year, things I have hoped for for years have been achieved, and I also feel a lot more secure in my position as a comic artist. Not that I doubted my position or potentials before, but today I feel I am truly a part of this all, and can make a difference. And that what I make is appreciated and seen for what it is, most of the time.

Here's a quick look back at 2013!

Milestones of 2013:

• January began the year with a walk down the memory lane, with me making a new cover for Mjau! for the collected edition (of all 9 chapters into one volume) for Kabusa Böcker.
  At the same time, I had sold the last of my English copies of A Song For Elise, and after asking I got a go-ahead from Tokyopop in Germany (that owns the International rights for the series) to print a new small batch. So I also re-did that cover, and added the short sidestory from the GUYS!-anthology to make a collected edition of A Song For Elise as well!
  And when at it, I also reordered new copies of The Marauders And The Secrets Of The Heart (The Harry Potter doujisnhi I made back in 2009) that also had gone out of print.

• In January, I also started drawing my contributing manga to this year's Nosebleed Studio anthology, this time with a Swedish theme. The story I made was Hearts of Midsummer, about a young girl named Julia who celebrates the Swedish holiday Midsummers Eve in her childhood village.
  We also tried crowdfunding for the first time, for our book Nosebleed Studio's Swedish Manga Anthology, and we raised more money than we asked for! Yaaay!
  
  

• In February-May I started my work as teacher, at both Serieskolan (Comic Art School) in Malmö and at a drawing course called Rit- och Skisstekning at Malmö University. Maybe it sounds hectic, to have had so much to think about, but actually it was pretty nice - both the fact that I got to teach and get away from my drawing a little, but also the different environments. It was fun! And it also payed for my living just enough so that I didn't have to take from my savings. Yay!

• In March I finally signed the book deal with Kolik förlag on the Swedish version of Sword Princess Amaltea! This project started back in Fall 2010, and now I finally had a publisher on the hook! Also, the Danish magazine Comic Party would publish the manga regularly. With two editors and a whole bunch of manuscript, preplanning and research done I was ready to take on the biggest and longest project of of my life!
  The layout sketches was allready done in the beginning of the year, so I just had to start drawing.

• As always, I was away on a couple of events this Spring as well, mostly conventions together with my awesome colleagues in Nosebleed Studio. The biggest one was of course the yearly happening S.I.S. (Stockholm's Intenational Comics Festival), where we released our new anthology. I also sold the new prints of Mjau!, A Song For Elise and the Harry Potter doujinshi, plus this year's Swedish Comic Sin  - the fourth anthology in the series!
  This project has been really a fun way to network and see people evolve, but also letting me act as an editor and produce books from start to finish. Sadly the fifth book will have to wait a little, because of me having too much to do with my new big manga project, and also this last fourth book having been cut in half when people left the project (because of their lack of time and inspiration). Well, that's how it works...
  
  

• During Spring time I also started making youtube videos with me drawing, to both promote the upcoming book and also to try it out. It went well, and I got a taste for making tutorials! Here's one where I ink the cover illustration for Sword Princess Amaltea book 1:
  
  
  
  
  
• My friend Yossra El Said and I also started making podcasts in Swedish, with the catchy name Seriesystrar (Comic Sisters). The idea was to have mostly women talking comics, and focus on constructive critisism, gender and ethnicity issues and the
  comic market internationally and nationally. For all Swedish readers, please check it out! I bet you'll like the show~
  

• Summer came, and while drawing like crazy on Sword Princess Amaltea, I also got the chance of a life time: To be one of five Swedish guests at a robot drawing tournament in Japan in late July! Crazy!! It was right in the middle of my freakish deadline (165 pages to be done before August) but I still went. My sister Catarina and three other awesome artists from Sweden - Jesper Nordqvist, Maria Fröhlich and Kei Mak - and I went to this event called Robopic. Payed trip and stay, and what an experience! Not only did we get to draw and compete with 100 Japanese in a Olympic-style drawing tournament, we also got to dine with the famous artists that made up the Jury, such as my idol Hideshi Hino-sensei!!
  And as if that wasn't enought... two of us even made it into the finalists - and I WON! Shock!!
  Sorry for not having made a blog entry about this just yet, I'm still waiting for the robot picture to be sent to us. So soon hopefully...
  I also sent some of my works to Japanese publishers, in hope of getting a meeting there - and I got two! More about that in the upcoming blog entry about the trip...

• Finally in August I handed in the book for printing, and it would not have been possible if it wasn't for my four awesome assistants Emil Johansson, Catarina Batista, Joakim Waller and Yossra El Said. Their help with book 1 made the crazy plan of 140 pages to be made in 5 months time actually possible! THANK YOU!!!!

• The book was released right in time for Gothenburg's Book Fair, where I signed books like crazy! Thank you all who came and got yourself a signed copy, you really made the release a success!!

• Another book that I participated in that was released then was Ordningen upprätthålls alltid by Per Thörn and published by Apart förlag, a comic anthology with more than 20 artists making comic adaptions of Per's short stories, all with connections to a criminal world. A really cool project, made possible by the awesome editor Johan Kimrin! By many reviews titled as "the best comic book printed in Sweden during all of 2013". Check it out!

• The Fall was mostly spent on teaching at Serieskolan (Comic Art School) and Malmö University's comic course, plus promoting Sword Princess Amaltea, but also on a side project I havn't mentioned much here at the blog. I was part of making an exhibition called Vicky, Jackie, Wendy about girl comic magazines in Sweden from 1950 up until today, in collaboration with librarian Hans Holm and Seriefrämjandet (Swedish Comic Association). The exhibition premiered at Malmö city library in October, as part of the childrens comic festival I Seriernas Värld ("In the world of comics") and I feel it's a very important, fun and interesting exhibition. We've even collected old and new girl comic magazines and displayed them as part of the exhibition.

• This year, I also got a another award; Nordiska Skolbibliotekarföreningens (Nordic School Library Association) gave Häxfolket written by Jo Salmson (and illustrated by me) their prize for the best childrens book 2013. We were invited, together with the amazing editors for Bonnier Carlsen that worked with us on the four books, to Skolforum (a school and teacher fair) to recieve the prize, and got to say some words on the stage before hundreds of teachers and librarians. Nice!

• In December, I had finally finished the layout sketches of book 2 of Sword Princess Amaltea, and started drawing and inking the pages. Around X-mas, I was about 15% in, which felt nice! All going according to my plan, and if my editor approves it, the book can be out in the end of the Summer! Looking forward to it!! 

I think that's all. A pretty nice year. Work at Malmö University and Serieskolan is enjoyable on so many levels, and also gives me more energy to work on my own stuff when I'm at home.

Also, books sales have done very well! (I don't often write about book sales, but I think more people should.)
Since 2010, Mjau! have sold in over 10 000 copies so far! Woah! That's a lot, according to people working in the buisness that I have mentioned this to.
Sword Princess Amaltea has also done amazingly! Since the release in September, almost all of the first edition's 1200 books are sold! In less than 4 months! Yay!!

This year has been elevating. I have recieved two awards (I shit you not, it's the first time I win first place in something this big), a book deal for my longest project yet, a trip to Japan where I got to talk to more editors and a bunch of egoboosting feedback through reviews of the new books and through people that I've met this year. Thank you all!

And to compare to last year, I think I made some history in 2013, like the Swede winning a manga award in Japan, and beginning a new Swedish manga series (we're not spoilt with that many of them, heh...)!
But let's say bye bye to 2013, and...

2013 - Let's draw!

Here it comes!
Time for my New Years resolution and plans for 2013.

First, let's check in with my 2012 New Years resolution:
This year, I'll take the chance while young and energetic and go to Japan! 

Hm... Okay, this will be pretty easy. I superfailed.
I really tried though! I applied for at least 7 or 8 funds or scholarships to try to get money to go there, since my own economy is not Japan-trip-friendly so to say. Since I wanted to stay there for at least 1-2 months, it would probably be around 40 000 sek (4000 euro or so) and that is not in my personal budget. But nope, no money recieved.
Also, to be fair, I have shifted the focus a little. I do see I can make manga here and send it there if I want to (like I have with Ribbon) and also that I have a possible career here. I'm thinking; how about make myself big enough here, and then export myself to Japan with a C.V. that will impress them?
I'll try both, I guess.
So, if I shall grade my self based on this resolution, I get a smashing 1 out of 5! Hahaha. At least I tried, E for effort!

Now over to the New Years resolution of 2013.
This year I will be working on my longest project ever!

That means, before this year is over, I must have beaten my longest manga so far with a new ongoing project. Since my longest manga is Mjau! with 250 pages, I need to have made at least 260 pages before this year is over. Yep, crazy. But I promise you I will!

And that project will be A Sword Princess Tale, which I have a Swedish and a Danish publisher on. More info soon!
The plan is to have the first volume (out of 3 or 4) in Swedish released in September, so my work is cut out for me.

Here's my plan for the year:
❂  January: Make the layout sketches for the 150 pages long first A Sword Princess Tale-volume, and also finish the 32-pages manga for Nosebleed Studio's next anthology.
❂  February-June: Draw the 150 pages of the first volume (about 30 of them just need some minor changes) while also working as a teacher 2 days a week at Serieskolan in Malmö and at Malmö Univerity.
 ❂  July-August: Perhaps some vacation, but also start making the layout sketches of the second A Sword Princess Tale volume!
❂  September-December:  Drawing the second volume.

Hopefully I will have made over 260 pages of the manga before the year is over, That will be so cool!
There needs to be some changes done though, i.e. on the armor of Amaltea, the main character.

2012 - in retrospect

2012 was a little bit disappointing... Well, not now that I look back on all the fun things I managed to do this year, but when it comes to all the things I was hoping for but didn't achieve. To defend myself I want to point to the fact that the things that I hoped for that didn't come true was because of others, not me. Sometimes in your life there's things that can't be done because other people don't give you the chance to do them.

I don't blame them though, I blame myself. One day, when I have become more well respected within the industry, I might get all things I hope for. Today, I have to live with the benefit of the doubt from others.

Time for a look back on the milestones of the past year, as I usually do this time around!

Milestones of 2012:

 

• In January I worked hard on finishing all three major comics that I made that year. Good way to start off the year, haha!
  A Sword Princess Tale - chapter 1 (fanzine made for SIS/SPX in Stockholm in April)
  Hooked On You (published in Nosebleed Studio's Seaside Stories anthology)
  A Song for Elise - REMIX: Memories (published in the Boy's Love anthology GUYS!)
  

• February came with a small achivement: my entry for the Japanese manga magazine Ribbon's monthly manga competition resulted in an honorable mention, a prize called もうひと息賞 ("Mou hito ikishou" = one more try-prize). My manga was mentioned in issue #2 this year, you can read the full review here.
  
  
• All through Spring, Summer and Fall, I applied for several artistic funds but recieved null. This was quite dissapointing. I know I can't expect to get any, but it's still heartbreaking every time you get a letter from one of the organizations saying "...you application could not be approved."
  Well, they won't get rid of me that easily! I'll keep trying until I get some!
  
  
• I was aslo teaching at Malmö Univeristy in their English comic course Comics, International Perspectives, specializing in the Japanese manga market. Very nice and fun, I like teaching at the University because it's so professional and enjoyable!
  
  
  
  
• In March and April, the main focus was to finish all the projects before Small Press Expo at Stockholms International Comic Fair (the biggest comic event in Sweden) in the end of April. Nosebleed Studio's book Seaside Stories was to be released, as well as the latest edition of Swedish Comic Sin (book 3) that I'm the editor of.
  Chapter one of A Sword Princess Tale was also sold at the event as a fanzine, and I also began my search for a publisher in these months, both inside and outside of Sweden. Most publishers take some time to think over things, and even though I had a Swedish publisher and a Danish one that was quite interested I wanted more. Back then, my goal with this project was to have at least three or more publishers working with me on this, to make the best out of their collected feedback, and also to get enough pay to have an assistant working with me on this.
  
  
  
  
  
• In the beginning of 2012, my childrens manga Mjau! also got an International deal with Portuguese NCreatures and their manga magazine Banzai.
  
  

• May and June was mostly waiting for replies from the publishers. I had also sent in my second entry to Ribbon in March, and got the results in June: the same honorable mention in issue #6! Read the full review here.
  
  

• I used all the spare time to work with my friend and colleague Elise Rosberg on the coming site NonstopCon, a Swedish community for Asian-fans of all sorts! During Spring and Summer, we worked on the layout, putting up a crowdfunding page (and recieved the full amount in the end!) and planned all the features of the site. Our webb developer Rick worked his ass off all Fall and Winter, but still didn't get it done until December which was our plan. The site is a little late, but it's all becasue we're not okay with just any crappy community site, we want this one to WORK!

• A well deserved vacation was made in July, to my aunt and relatives in Portugal. More inspirational trips made, and lots of photos taken!
  
  

• In September my sister Catarina and I finally finished Nosebleed Studio's new Worppress site! It's so nice to finnaly have a professional and working webshop and also a manga reader with flip-book funtion! Check it out!!
  
  

• I felt I needed to make a trip to some of the bigger comic fairs in the world, both for my self an my career. As I am a big fan of American reality shows (yup, one of my sins), I decided it was time to go to the big land over seas. So, Emil and I went to New York Comic Con in October and I got to talk to Yen Press, a meeting that changed my perspective on things and also my focus for A Sword Princess Tale. I'm no longer pursuing a multinational deal to begin with, but focusing on making something for a Nordic market that might work elsewhere.

  Afterwards, I also made a report from NYCC in comic form for Bild&Bubbla, that will be printed sometime in 2013.
  
  

• For the second time around, I got to teach at Malmö University's comic course in Swedish, Serieteckning och visuellt berättande. Yet again, so rewarding! Teaching is a great way to learn more about your own profession, it forces me to overlook my work process and put it on paper (I make handouts for all courses, I think I should put them here on my page actually).
  I was also teaching at Serieskolan in Malmö, which also feels cool and honoring (they trust me!). The week there focused on storytelling, very convenient because I had just finished a book (John Truby's The Anatomy of Story: 22 Steps to Becoming a Master Storyteller)  and some self-studies on storytelling!
  
  

• Some Swedish media attention during this year:
  ✎ An interview in City Malmö (nr 2012-08-23) about nerdy hobbies.
  ✎ An interview together with Catarina in Lokaltidningen Lund on the 28th of September.
  ✎ The above shown frontpage and article of Sydsvenskan Omkretsen on the 11th of November.
  
  

• All through the year, Nosebleed Studio visited a lot of manga/comic conventions:
  KodachiCon in Lund (May) - where we sold a lot of our books to our fans in Skåne (the Southen most region in Sweden). I also did my Yaoi presentation again, which was fun!
  UppCon in Uppsala (June) - I did a presentation on my attempts to get into the Japanese manga market, and we sold a bunch of our Swedish manga to many awesome fans, thank you!!
  NärCon in Linköping (July) - I did the Yaoi presentation here as well.
  NowJapan in Vilnius (August) - we where Internationally invited to this Lithuanian convention, cool huh? I did the Yaoi presentation there (very well attended!) and we also did the manga battle tournament, fun!
  AltCom in Malmö (November) - not a manga con, but still fun. We managed to get into the paper as well!
  Confusion in Göteborg (December) - I did the Yaoi-presentation again, and there was a line of people who didn't even get in... It was popular! We met a lot of awesome fans and gained new ones as well.
  
  

•   In the end of the year, comics started calling for me again. I had almost stopped drawing at all during April to October, and now I not only have to make a 32 page manga to Nosebleed Studio's next anthology (sneak peek to the right) but also I need to start making the layout sketches for A Sword Princess Tale! The first 4 chapters are planned to be finished before July and the Swedish and Danish publisher are both eager to have it and so am I! Okay, let's go!!

Hm... I think that's a pretty good summary of my year. I probably forgot some small things here and there, but all in all it's pretty much like this.

This year was disappointing in some ways. I didn't get a contract with A Sword princess Tale as early as I wanted it (I would have wanted to start working on it in the Fall) and the God of funds was not on my side this year. I do survive though, thanks to all the childrens books I have made last year.

But, I'm still pleased with the victories; 2 honorable mentions in Japanese manga magazine Ribbon, the publishing of Mjau! in Banzai, a new homepage for Nosebleed Studio and all in all 90 manga pages finished (and another 60 pages in rough sketch). Not my most productive year, but still pretty awesome!
